THEwine tourism, also called wine or wine tourism, is a form of tourism offering activities around wine, vines and the know-how of winegrowers. It is still relatively underdeveloped in France, yet it has many virtues for both winegrowers and territories.

The different types of wine tourism activities

There are a multitude of possible wine tourism activities:

  • Tourist grape harvests;
  • The visit of cellars, castles and wine houses;
  • Welcome to the cellar at the winegrower;
  • The wine routes;
  • Walks and hikes through the vineyard;
  • Treasure hunts;
  • Agritourism services;
  • Visits to wine museums and wine villages;
  • Festivals and events around wine;
  • Commented tastings in dedicated places (wine bars, etc.);
  • Internships and conferences in wine academies;
  • Business tourism around wine;
  • Vinotherapy offers;
  • etc.

How to set up wine tourism?

Study your environment

  1. Take stock of your structure.
  2. Study your customers, especially those who are directly around you, study their expectations;
  3. Study your competitors in the area, their offers, what is being done in the field of wine tourism;
  4. Contact the tourist offices, travel agencies, the Departmental tourism committee and the interprofessional organizations. They can help you set up your project.

Offer a quality service

  • Take care of the reception of your visitors: put in place a quality approach intended for your staff and for yourself, the entrance to the estate/cellar must be irreproachable.
  • Offer experiential services and quality products;
  • Make your customers actors of your activities: Solicit the multi-sensory of the customer thanks to his implication in the visit (ask questions, invite the public to touch the barrels, to smell the smell of the vine/wine/wood…) .
  • Personalize your services and customer reception: adapt, as far as possible, your services to each type of wine tourism clientele;
  • Have your products tasted, according to Atout France, a wine tourist spends an average of €250 on consumption and purchase of wine at the estate;
  • Do not limit yourself to wine, offer other products in partnership with other service providers or sales representatives;
  • Think about the accessibility of your customers;
  • Think about the children of your customers, example: Offer the tasting of grape juice to children to create a playful atmosphere, and create a corner for children;
  • If you are targeting agencies, consider packaged offers;
  • Train yourself upstream of your project, VIVEA, FAFSEA, the ICV notably offer training dedicated to tourism.
  • Become a bearer of the Quality Tourism brand;
  • Equip yourself to offer a digitization of your wine tourism offer, between virtual tours, online aperitifs or home delivery of products.

Make yourself known

The role of EtOH Agency is to help professionals in the wine sector, but also beer and spirits players to work on their Marketing strategy (positioning, brand image, e-reputation, etc.) and communication (graphics, video, storytelling, wine maps, etc.).

These are points that you absolutely must work on before communicating about your wine tourism activity.

  • Communicate with local tourism stakeholders: Tourist Office, tourism professionals;
  • Participate in events to make yourself known, following the example of the first Virtual Fair Burgundy Jura Wine & Tourism or Destination Vineyards;
  • Digital communication allows the most isolated winegrowers to exist, take advantage of this opportunity to make yourself known: design a quality website, register on the social networks where your customers are and on specialized online directories such as https ://www.visitfrenchwine.com/;
  • Get involved in associations and professional clubs to meet professionals from the same background as you;

Do not forget to find out about the regulations in force according to your activity(ies).

Current regulations for wine tourism

Are you going to have a commercial activity or an agricultural activity?

If the turnover of your wine tourism activity does not exceed €50 and it represents less than 000% of the total turnover of the farm, it can be considered as an extension of the agricultural activity.

Consider accessibility

Since 2015, Establishments open to the public and Facilities Open to the Public must be accessible to the disabled. Remember to make your premises accessible to everyone.

The proposal for a stay and packaged offers

If you plan to link up with other service providers for your offer, and thus market complete products, there are specific regulations for the sale of packages or packaged holiday offers about which you should find out.

Do you need a liquor license?

Winegrowers who sell their wines and have them tasted free of charge at their place of production (tax warehouse) are exempt from licensing. In all other cases (paying tasting, catering, etc.) obtaining a license is compulsory.
