Spiritourism
What is Spiritourism?
The spirits houses are inspired by oenology to create the " spiritualism “, contraction of the words “spirits” and “tourism”, to attract a French and international clientele.
Discovering the manufacturing secrets of cognac, calvados or even rum by visiting the distilleries, this is the reason why professionals in the sector have developed a second profession around welcoming lovers of their drinks: visits, tours, production and tasting workshops…
If the term is rather recent, at least in its visibility to the general public, the tourist activity linked to spirits is on the other hand an old and important activity. Indeed, many countries have long since launched spirit tourism. Like Scotland. The Whiskey and Distillery Tour is as unmissable as the Haunted Castles and Loch Ness Tour. The strong link between this production, the terroirs and the history of Scotland led the distilleries to open up to visitors as early as the 1960s.
France is today better known in the world for its wines than for its spirits and yet, on closer inspection, France is a very large producer of spirits. The French Federation of Spirits, founded in 1996, brings together 200 spirits production and distribution companies located in all French regions.
With 46 main categories of spirits (including bitters, aniseed (pastis), bitters, brandy, fruit brandies, wine brandies (Armagnac, Cognac), cider brandies (Calvados) , gins, liqueurs, rums, vodkas, whiskies) France has a potential present throughout its territory, including overseas with rum.
